Sport Unlimited

The County Sports Partnership Network led the implementation of Sport Unlimited, an integral part of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People. Sport Unlimited contributes to the aim of giving every child and young person aged 5 to 19 the chance to take part in 5 hours of PE and Sport per week ('the 5 hour offer'). Sporting opportunities intended to be affordable, accessible, appropriate and attractive.

The spring term, April 2011, marks the end of the three-year Sport Unlimited programme and funding. CSPs, delivery partners and coaches have worked hard throughout the programme produced some fantastic projects and results that has ensure the overall three-year target was achieved.

Partnership Working

The scale and scope of Sport Unlimited has been very impressive with the creation of new partnerships, with non-traditional and non-sport organisations, facilitating the joined up delivery of provision to young people. Delivery partners included: commercial organisations; School Sports Partnerships; National Governing Body clubs; Local Authorities; leisure providers; information, advice and guidance services; youth services; voluntary groups; Extended Schools; and many more. Funding was secured from new partners, including: Youth Services; Children and Young People’s Services; and PCTs.

Headline Figures

· The overall retain figure across the three-year programme has reached 960,938 young people, this exceeds the three year target of 900,000 by almost 7%

· 1,170,000 young people were engaged in the project across a three year period.

· 35 CSPS exceeded their three year target; nine CSPs were within 10% of achieveing their targets and just 5 CSPs achieved below 90% of their three year targets.

Spring Term 2011

The spring term of activity has been the most successful term of the Sport Unlimited programme and all but one CSP exceeded their year three target which is a significant achievement.

The average retention rate across all 49 CSPs for the spring term was 84.5%. Two CSPs (Black Country Sports Partnership and Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnership) more than doubled their individual year 3 target.

The commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the programme also continued throughout the spring term and it is evident that many young people are going on to join a club to participate further. The data from the spring round of sustainability tracking research is positive with 412 young people tracked, revealing that over half had joined a club to continue their participation in activity
