The PRO-ACTIVE London Young Events Volunteering Project has had another sucessful year, exceeding the targets set by Youth Sports Trust, HSBC and V the funding bodies.
A final celebration event took place at Twickenham Stadium on 21 July, where participants and supporters alike reflected on the amazing achievements and outstanding achievers were awarded prizes for commiment and dedication.
The projects supports young people 16+ to Volunteer at London sporting events and has been managed since September 2009 by Daniel Nixon at LSBU's Academy of Sport, who was himself a fulltime volunteer. The project now has close to 500 registered volunteers from across London, wiith 263 new young volunteers recruited over the last year. Daniel and his team have supported over 30 events, with 64 volunteers attending 3 or more events this year.
Young people have amassed a total of 2673 hours at a diverse range of sporting events, from Rugby League and Basketball national events, the London Marathon and The London Youth Games, to the ITU World Triatholon Championships and PRO-ACTIVE London Events 5K Your Way and Dare2Dance.
A new year for the project begins in September when the new Young Events Volunteering Development Officer Emma Wagstaff joins the Academy. For the 2010/2011 programme POR-ACTIVE London will also be launching a new resource for the programme, an online brokerage system. Meanwhile Daneil Nixon has moved to his new role of Badminton Development Officer, still based within the Academy of Sport.
