Active Norfolks successful First Village Games

Teams from around Norfolk headed to the UEA Sportspark for the inaugural Village Games final in September Winning villages from the 6 District events that took place over the summer, converged on the Sportspark to pit their skills against each other. There was a mixture of activities including 5 a-side football, darts, wattbikes, short mat bowls, badminton, table tennis, archery, tennis and rounders with a fun tug of war at the end. The project delivered by the Norfolk’s County Sport Partnership, Active Norfolk was deemed a great success.

Ellen Vanlint, the Project Officer for the Games, said

'It was a fantastic first County final and the results were very close in all 3 categories. It was lovely to see families competing together and such a wide range of ages across our 9 sports. Everyone who took part were winners in their own right, but special congratulations to all our winning teams, both overall and in each sport. I am certainly looking forward to next years event already, roll on 2012'

The Norfolk Village Games secured £577,701 of National Lottery funding from the £10 million Rural Communities fund to run the project , which was launched after Sport England research revealed that two thirds of the local authorities with the lowest sports participation rates are in rural areas.

The Norfolk Village Games has been granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
