Since its launch in January, CSPs have successfully used Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to raise the profile of women’s sport and increase participation across a wide range of activities. This has been achieved through targeted marketing, creating new local partnerships and working with existing providers to ensure there are suitable activities for women and girls to join within their communities.
Leicester & Rutland Sport (LRS) used the profile and messaging of the national campaign to create a ‘This Girl Can Week’ in June with the aim to get more local women into sport and physical activity.
- LRS worked with partners and local communities to offer over 250 low cost sport and physical activity sessions.
- A ‘champions pack’ was produced by the CSP, which helped show organisations how to target women and girls using the messages from the campaign.
- Female ‘Local Champions’ were recruited who had the passion and drive to support the campaign ethos.
- A ‘This Girl Can’ Roadshow was run in Melton where schools/colleges delivered taster sessions engaging over 50 girls aged 14-18.
3455 female participants of all ages took part in the campaign week, resulting in 614 new members to the countywide Active Together Programme, which provided sustainable exit routes and boosted retention in sport and physical activity post campaign. The Active Together Programme is developed by Physical Activity Development Officers in each district across the county.
