The Birmingham Way is a systematic approach to workforce development; designed for the sports & activity sector, it now provides the evidence through research to demonstrate the key qualities and characteristics that underpin broader skills development need to deliver a great customer experience. The model considers identification of the right people, the skills and personal development of those people, and the opportunity for them to gain practical experience.
This is an approach that recognises there are different barriers and motivations that affect different audiences and segments of people who avoid being active and as a result there is a need for a workforce that has the right skills and characteristics to provide a great experience to the residents of Birmingham in their journey to come more active.
Our insight suggests there is also need for a visible and accessible pathway in order for us to recruit a reflective paid and volunteer workforce that focuses on community development and utilising sport and physical activity to knit communities together by being part of each other’s lives.
A key outcome for The Birmingham Way is to support local communities to identify and build capacity from within their participant groups by building a workforce that matches skills and personality to the respective sectors or environment. It therefore provides the model to build skills development through an accessible and inclusive sport and physical activity experience; these skills provide individuals with the confidence, belief and abilities to aspire to future employment for themselves as well asimproving the customer experience, encouraging resilient habits and increasing self-esteem.
