Over the last five months Active Devon has been working with South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton to encourage more girls to become active.
Working closely with the PE staff Kate Hutchings and Charlotte Bowen, a loyalty card scheme has been created for all 500 girls in the school. With every extra curricular activity session they attend, the girls' loyalty card is stamped. At every fifth tick, a prize ranging from hair ties, to sports bras, to activity tracker watches was awarded.
"It has been brilliant to see a higher number of girls attending extra curricular activities since we launched this scheme. Having incentives is a natural step to begin the commitment to a club in the hope that this continues when the incentives may not be there anymore. Instead we aim for their drive to become intrinsic; from enjoyment, setting of personal goals or increased confidence and self esteem.
The Loyalty Card Scheme is just one way that we have tried to increase participation and reduce barriers to physical activity for girls, and there is more in the pipeline. We've had numerous boys come to ask us 'what about Boys Active?' and 'why can't we have a Loyalty Card?'!!" (Kate Hutchings, South Dartmoor Community College)
To date nearly 100 different girls have claimed a prize, and with the loyalty card still running it continues to bring a larger demand of activity sessions, and has hugely tackled inactivity with girls within the school.
