To address low levels of activity in young children across Cornwall, Active Cornwall worked with the Youth Sports Trust and Public Health Cornwall to deliver the YST Healthy Movers programme.
If children have experiences that feel fun, positive and give them a sense of confidence, they’re more likely to want to be active in the future.
Children who are more active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of others, but over half of children in Cornwall are not active enough to enjoy these benefits. Some don’t have the same opportunities to be active, and so we want to help support a change that gives these children the same opportunities as others.
This is particularly true for girls, disabled young people, young people with long-term health conditions, those from less affluent families and youngsters from Black and Asian backgrounds. Current inequalities unfortunately start from a young age and therefore need to be addressed at a young age.
To help address this Active Cornwall worked with the Youth Sports Trust and Public Health Cornwall to deliver the YST Healthy Movers programme.
Healthy Movers is delivered in early years settings and aims to develop children’s physical literacy, wellbeing and school readiness through a range of physical activities. The programme is delivered through resources and training for practitioners in early years settings and families to continue the activities at home. Healthy Movers was delivered by the Youth Sport Trust (YST), in partnership with Active Cornwall and Public Health Cornwall. The programme ran from September 2021 to August 2022.
The impact of the programme has been seen across a number of areas including:
- Improvement in personal, social and emotional development from 69% to 99%
- Improvement in speech, language and communication from 73% to 91%
